Washing Machine Lid Switch & Door Lock Repair
Machine ignores the start button, flashes a lid/door error, or holds laundry hostage behind a locked door — lid switch and door interlock repair for every washer type.
Lid Switches & Door Interlocks — The Safety Gate
Every washer refuses to run with its opening unlocked — top loads use a lid switch under the cabinet lip, front loads use a door interlock with a lock heater and door-sense contact. When these fail, the machine either won't start at all (a classic not-starting cause), aborts mid-cycle, or traps laundry behind a jammed lock — the subject of our door-won't-open guide. Brand codes for this circuit include dE and dL. A door locked with laundry inside is one of the faults our emergency repair handles same-day.
Interlock diagnosis separates three layers: the lock unit itself (continuity through the heater and sense contacts), the mechanical striker or door hook, and the board feed. Front load interlocks also interact with the gasket — a deformed boot can hold the door off its lock. We stock locks for LG, Samsung, IFB, Bosch, Whirlpool and Godrej machines. On top loaders, a dead lid circuit reads exactly like a spin refusal — our not-spinning guide helps separate the two.
Lock-Circuit Faults and Fixes
| Fault | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Failed lid switch | Won't agitate or spin, lid-open logic | Switch replacement + striker alignment |
| Burnt lock heater | Door never unlocks, dE error | Interlock assembly replacement |
| Bent door hook | Lock clicks, cycle won't start | Hook / hinge alignment |
| Wiring break to lock | Intermittent start failures | Harness repair |
| Board lock-driver fault | New lock still rejected | PCB repair |
Door-lock faults are same-day jobs through the washing machine repair service — and if your machine trips the mains when locking, treat it as urgent and stop using hot cycles. Lock swaps sit at the modest end of our repair cost guide.

Lock-Circuit Measurements — Continuity, Ohms and Delay
Lock diagnosis is a short list of measurements: continuity through the lid switch in both states, resistance across the interlock's lock heater, sense-contact behaviour as the door closes, and the engage delay the design intends. Our service engineer takes them in that order, so a lock repair replaces only the layer that actually failed. Lock checks ride along with the visits included in our AMC plans.
Where every electrical reading is correct but the door still misbehaves, the fault is mechanical or upstream — the hook alignment described in our door release guide, or the board's driver stage via our PCB service.
| Test | Instrument | Expected Reading | Fault Indication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lid switch continuity | Multimeter (continuity / ohms) | Closed circuit with lid shut, open when raised | No closure with lid shut: dead switch, no start |
| Lock heater resistance | Multimeter (ohms) on interlock pins | Specification-range reading | Infinite: burnt heater, door never unlocks |
| Door-sense contact | Ohms through the sense terminal | State changes cleanly as the door closes | No change: board never sees the door locked |
| Lock engage delay | Timed observation after pressing start | Locks within a few seconds, by design | Instant or absent: weak heater or faulty feed |
| Hook / striker engagement | Slow close inspection | Hook enters fully, door seats evenly | Partial engagement: click without lock, mechanical alignment |
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about our washing machine service, repair process, warranty and pricing.
Why won't my top load washer start unless I press the lid switch?
The lid switch safety interlock has failed or gone out of alignment — the control board thinks the lid is open and blocks agitation and spin. A technician tests the switch continuity and the striker alignment; the switch is inexpensive to replace.
My front loader door is locked shut with clothes inside — what now?
Wait a few minutes after the cycle ends: the lock holds for safety until the heater and drum cool. If it stays locked, the door interlock (lock heater or door-sense contact) or its wiring has failed — our technician opens it safely and replaces the lock assembly. Never force the door.
What do dE, dL and door errors mean?
They are door-locked circuit codes: the board doesn't see the door closed or the lock doesn't engage. Causes include a faulty interlock, a bent door hook, a misaligned gasket pressing the door, or a wiring break — diagnosed in minutes.
How is a lid switch tested with a multimeter?
The switch is checked for continuity in both states: closed circuit with the lid pressed shut and open circuit with it raised. A switch that never closes convicts itself instantly, but one that reads intermittently while worked by hand is the sneakier fault — both readings decide the switch replacement in our start-fault diagnosis.
What resistance should a door interlock's lock heater show?
Across the heater terminals on a front load interlock, a healthy bi-metal lock reads a specification-range resistance; an infinite reading is a burnt heater and means the door will never unlock on its own. That single ohm measurement separates a lock swap from a wiring or board problem before any parts come out of the van.
Why does the door lock take a few seconds to engage?
Front load interlocks work by warming a bi-metal element that pulls the lock plunger — that is the deliberate 3–5 second delay after you press start, and the matching hold after the cycle ends while it cools. A lock that engages instantly or not at all is failing that design, and our door-won't-open guide explains what to do when it stays engaged.
How is door hook or striker alignment checked?
The technician closes the door slowly and watches the hook enter the lock aperture: it should engage the plunger fully and positively, with the door seated evenly against the gasket all round. A bent or loose hook clicks without locking — a mechanical fault that no replacement lock will cure, and one we rule out at every lock service.
How long do lid switches and door interlocks last?
Typically the better part of a machine's life — 8–12 years — but door slamming, hanging on the open door, and gasket deformation that loads the hook unevenly all shorten it. Simple habits from our maintenance guide protect the whole lock assembly.
Are aftermarket lock assemblies safe to fit?
The lock is a safety component, so ratings matter: a correct-specification interlock matches the original heater resistance and sense-contact logic, while an arbitrary substitute can latch weakly or misreport the door state to the board. We fit brand-matched locks only — the range we carry is on our brands page.
Which parts sit in the same circuit as the door lock?
The door hook and hinge, the gasket that seats the door, the wiring harness, and the board's lock-driver stage all share the safety circuit — a fault in any of them reads as a lock problem. Persistent lock errors with a new interlock fitted point to the driver stage, which is work for our PCB repair service.

Interlocks are safety devices first — they prove the door is shut before allowing spin. No-spin symptoms that trace here are described in the spin-failure guide, and lock-against-you cases in the door-release guide.
