Washer Not Draining
Drain codes and standing water share the same root causes.
Open guide →F21 is Whirlpool's Long Drain code: the drain phase ran past its allowed time. The drainage path is short, and the fault is almost always at one of its three checkpoints.
F21 appears on Whirlpool front loaders and Duet-family machines when the water level doesn't fall fast enough during drain. Whirlpool's top loaders express the same fault as an F-codes variant or a slow-drain-without-code. Either way, the checklist is identical — and it's the same physical fault our not-draining guide covers.
| Brand | What it means | Usual trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | F21 — Long Drain (front load / Duet platforms) | Filter, pump, pressure switch — Whirlpool service |
| Samsung | Equivalent is 5E/5C | Same drainage path |
| Bosch | Equivalent is E18 | Filter and pump clogs |
| LG | Equivalent is OE | Trap, pump, hose |
Cancel the cycle, let any drain phase finish, unplug the machine before opening anything.
Access the drain filter (bottom-front flap on most Whirlpool front loaders), drain into a tray, and clear the trap chamber fully.
Spin the impeller — free with slight resistance is healthy. Check the hose for lint narrowing and re-route without high loops.
If F21 clusters after hot or softener-heavy washes, halve the detergent for a week — suds-induced F21s vanish with dosing discipline.
If the code returns after these checks, the fault is inside the machine — valves, sensors, locks or the control board need proper instruments. Book a doorstep diagnosis (₹400, adjusted in your bill) and we'll identify the failed part before quoting anything.

F21 is a race the drainage path lost, so the useful question is always which checkpoint slowed the water. Each row below matches a common F21 presentation to the component that explains it and the repair that follows.
| Code state | Probable cause | Component to test | Fix path |
|---|---|---|---|
| F21, lint and debris at the trap | Clogged filter | Drain filter and trap chamber | Full clean; retry a timed drain |
| F21, drain visibly slow | Weak pump or narrowed hose | Pump flow rate, hose bore | Pump replacement or hose flush |
| F21 after hot or softener washes | Suds signature | Detergent dose, rinse cycle | Halve dose; hot rinse-only verification |
| Tub empty but F21 shows | Level misreported | Air dome, pressure switch hose | Chamber flush; switch test |
| F21 plus refused spin | Level never resets | Pressure switch and drain path | Clear path first; switch if it persists |
The same fault in other alphabets is decoded in our Samsung 5E and Bosch E18 guides, and the no-code version of a blocked drain is in the not-draining walkthrough.
Quick answers about our washing machine service, repair process, warranty and pricing.
Yes, gradually. A straining pump overheats, and standing water feeds mould and gasket damage. Treat F21 as an early warning rather than a nuisance code. The standing water it leaves behind is also what our deep-cleaning service clears up.
The pump motor (weak, not dead) or the pressure switch. Both need instruments: a flow test distinguishes a weak pump; a pressure test distinguishes a lazy switch. Both are same-visit repairs. Rates are on our pricing page.
Bulky items shed lint in clumps that pack the trap fast, and they hold water longer during drain. Clean the filter after every bulky-item wash — that habit alone ends most recurring F21s.
The pressure switch watches the water level through the whole drain phase; if the level hasn't dropped to the reset point within the allowed window — typically several minutes — the board logs F21 and halts. A pump moving even a reduced flow can overrun that window, which is why F21 so often means 'weak pump' rather than 'dead pump'.
It's behind the bottom-front access panel, and it holds a litre or more even after a cancelled cycle. Cancel the cycle, let any residual drain run, unplug, then turn the filter cap slowly and in stages, letting water control its own speed into a shallow tray. Opening it fully at once is how floors get flooded — patience costs nothing here.
The air dome is a small chamber on the tub that feeds the pressure switch through a thin hose. Detergent sludge can plug it so the switch keeps reporting water that has already gone — the pump drains perfectly, the level never 'drops' on the board, and the clock runs out as F21. If your tub is empty but the code shows, the dome and hose are the first places we look.
Foam doesn't pump like water: the impeller churns it without moving much mass, and the pressure switch reads the foamy residue as standing level. Hot washes and too much detergent are the usual recipe, which is why F21s cluster after them. Halve the dose for a week and run a hot rinse-only cycle; if the code vanishes, the pump was never the problem.
When a timed test passes: a full tub should drain well inside Whirlpool's window with the new pump, and the pressure switch should confirm the empty state cleanly. A pump swap that skips the timed verification can hide a second fault — a narrowed hose or lazy switch — that resurfaces as another F21 within weeks. Verification is part of our pump replacement visit.
The same long-drain fault appears as 5E/5C on Samsung, E18 on Bosch and OE on LG — one short drainage path, four alphabets. And when the drain blocks badly enough, the spin usually refuses too, which is why our spin-failure guide often ends up describing the same clog. For the Whirlpool alphabet's other F-codes, a diagnosis sorts the numbering quickly.
Not recommended — first drain manually through the filter access, clear what you find, and only then retry. Running repeated drain attempts on a clogged path overheats the pump, and standing water in a front loader slowly loads the base with moisture that breeds mould. Treat the manual drain as step one of the fix, not an inconvenience before it.
Error codes are clues, not verdicts — the same family of faults appears under different codes across brands. These related codes, symptoms and services complete the diagnosis.
F21 is Whirlpool's drain-window fault — the cycle clock expired before the tub emptied. Pump performance is restored via the pump service, and the parallel Samsung code is decoded in the 5E guide.
