LE Error on a Washing Machine — Two Different Faults, One Code

LE is a code that means different things depending on your brand: on LG it's a motor fault; on Samsung it's a leak warning. Diagnosing it brand-blind leads to the wrong repair — this guide separates them.

What This Code Is Telling You

This is where brand knowledge matters most. On LG, LE means Motor Locked — the Direct Drive motor stalled or the board can't read its position. On Samsung, LE (or LE1) means Water Leak detected — moisture reached the machine's base tray. Same two letters, completely different machines inside. A stalled LG motor usually announces itself first — the warning signs are collected in our burning smell guide.

BrandWhat it meansUsual trigger
LGMotor Locked — overload or rotor position faultOverloaded wash, sensor or drive fault — LG service
SamsungWater Leak detected in base tray (LE/LE1)Gasket leak, hose seep, tub seal — Samsung service

WhirlpoolUses LF/F-codes instead; LE doesn't applySee F21 for drain-related faults

Common Causes Behind This Code

  • LG — chronic overloading: heavy loads stall the motor; the board locks out to protect the windings.
  • LG — rotor position (hall) sensor failure: the motor can't report its position, so the board reads it as locked.
  • LG — wiring/connector faults between motor and board produce identical symptoms.
  • Samsung — door boot/gasket leak: water runs down into the base and trips the float switch.
  • Samsung — leaking hoses or tub seal: any drip into the base triggers the same sensor.
  • Samsung — oversudsing: excess detergent foam escapes and mimics a leak.

Safe DIY Checks Before Calling a Technician

Identify Your Brand First

LG showing LE with a humming-but-not-turning drum = motor path. Samsung showing LE with water under the machine = leak path. Right branch, right fix.

LG: Reduce the Load & Reset

Unplug 10 minutes, halve the load, retry. A one-off overload clears; repeated LE doesn't.

Samsung: Find the Water

Pull the machine out, dry the base, run a short cycle watching for drips — gasket fold, hose joints, pump area.

Book if It Repeats

LG's sensor/drive faults and Samsung's leak sources both need instruments to pin down — a guessed repair here costs double.

If the code returns after these checks, the fault is inside the machine — valves, sensors, locks or the control board need proper instruments. Book a doorstep diagnosis (₹400, adjusted in your bill) and we'll identify the failed part before quoting anything.

LE Branches — Motor Fault vs Leak Fault, Side by Side

Because LE splits into two unrelated faults by brand, the fastest diagnostic move is to place your machine in the correct column first. The table below pairs each observed state with the component that explains it and the fix that follows. Most LE call-outs are front-loader drive work — our front-load repair service covers the platform.

Code stateProbable causeComponent to testFix path
LG — once, after a heavy washOverload stall protectionNone — reset and halve the loadUnplug 15 minutes, retry half-loaded

Samsung — water in base trayGenuine leak pathDoor boot, hose joints, tub sealDry tray, locate and seal the drip

The IFB drive-loop equivalent of the motor branch is covered in our AC6 decode, and the leak branch shares its causes with the general leak diagnosis guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about our washing machine service, repair process, warranty and pricing.

My LG shows LE after every heavy load. Is that normal?

The first time, yes — protection doing its job. If a normal-sized load triggers it, the position sensor or motor connector is failing. It escalates to a permanently locked drum, so book a diagnosis early. The pricing page covers the visit.

Samsung LE with no visible water anywhere — is the sensor broken?

Possibly, but check foam first: excess detergent creates suds that drain into the base slowly and trip the float long after the cycle. Run a hot rinse with no detergent; if LE returns, the float or a hidden seep is the cause.

Is LE expensive to fix?

It depends entirely on which branch you're in: a Samsung gasket or hose fix is routine; an LG position sensor is moderate; an LG drive-board fault is the costliest branch. Diagnosis first — never accept a quote for 'LE repair' without knowing which fault it is. Ballpark figures per branch are in our repair cost guide.

How long should an LG power cycle run before retrying after LE?

Give it a full 10 to 15 minutes unplugged — the drive circuit latches its fault state and a short unplug often isn't enough to clear it. After the reset, run the machine half-loaded: a one-off overload clears, and a repeated LE within the next two or three washes confirms a sensor or drive fault rather than laundry.

What is the hall (rotor position) sensor's role in an LG LE?

LG's Direct Drive motor reports its exact rotor angle to the board through a hall sensor mounted on the stator. If that signal drops out, the board can't tell whether the motor is turning, stalled or wildly out of step — and it locks the drive out as LE. The sensor itself is inexpensive; the skill is confirming it's the sensor and not the harness feeding it.

LG shows LE and there's a hot, burnt smell from the machine. How urgent?

Treat it as urgent and unplug: a stalled motor drawing locked-rotor current heats its windings fast, and the smell means that stage has begun. Further retries can turn a sensor fix into a motor rewind. Our motor repair service tests winding resistance and insulation before anything is quoted.

Where is the leak sensor that triggers Samsung's LE?

It's a float switch sitting in the base tray beneath the tub. Any water that drips off the gasket, hose joints or tub seal collects there and lifts the float, which the board reads as LE. Pull the machine out, tip the residual water out of the tray, and you've cleared the symptom — then find what dripped, or it refills and the code returns.

Could excess detergent really cause a leak code on my Samsung?

Regularly, yes. Oversudsing pushes foam past the door boot and the sump area; the foam condenses and drains into the base tray long after the cycle, lifting the float hours later. Run a hot service wash with no detergent and the tray dry — if LE stays away, your dosing was the culprit rather than any component. Related overflow symptoms live in our leak tracing guide.

Which codes on other brands cover the same motor and leak faults as LE?

The motor branch has a direct cousin in IFB's AC6 — both are drive-loop failures where command and feedback disagree, decoded in our AC6 guide. The leak branch has no famous letter code elsewhere; most brands just keep running until the water shows on your floor. Samsung's LE is arguably the more honest of the two designs.

Can repeated LE events permanently damage an LG Direct Drive?

Yes, in two ways: every stall event heats the windings, and running on a failing hall sensor lets the drive command the motor out of step, which stresses both stator and rotor magnets. Lockouts exist to prevent exactly this, but they only work if you stop retrying. An early diagnosis visit keeps the repair at sensor cost instead of motor cost.

Related Fault Codes, Problems & Services

Error codes are clues, not verdicts — the same family of faults appears under different codes across brands. These related codes, symptoms and services complete the diagnosis.

LE splits into two meanings by brand — motor lock on LG, water overfill on others — and guessing wrong costs a part. Motor-feedback faults are tested via the motor service, level faults via the fill diagnosis.
