Washing Machine Water Inlet Valve Replacement

Slow fill, no fill, trickle-fill or overflow — the inlet valve solenoid is behind most water-intake faults. Doorstep testing and genuine valve replacement for every brand.

What the Inlet Valve Does — and Why It Fails

The water inlet valve is the electrically-controlled gate that lets water into the wash tub. Inside are solenoid coils — when the control board energises one, its plunger opens and water flows through the matching chamber (hot, cold or detergent-flush). Coils burn out, plungers jam with sediment, and the inlet mesh filters choke on hard-water scale — the three failure modes behind most fill problems. Routine care through our AMC plans keeps sediment from ever reaching that stage.

If your machine shows a fill-related fault code — 4E on Samsung, IE on LG, E1 on many others — the inlet valve is the first component our technician tests. It takes minutes with a multimeter: each coil should read roughly 3–5 kΩ. What a full valve swap costs is set out in our repair cost guide.

Our washing machine repair service carries inlet valves for LG, Samsung, IFB, Whirlpool, Bosch, Haier and Godrej washers, so most replacements finish in a single visit. Pair the repair with a deep cleaning service to clear the scale that killed the valve in the first place. A valve jammed fully open, meanwhile, is a job for our emergency repair service, not a wait-and-see.

Inlet Valve Measurements — What a Technician Tests and Why

Valve diagnosis is measurement-first, because three different faults look identical from the laundry room: a dead solenoid, a missing voltage feed and a clogged inlet mesh all produce the same silent washer. Our technician measures coil resistance in kΩ, supply voltage at the connector during a commanded fill, and tap pressure in bar or kPa before recommending any valve replacement.

The table below shows the readings we expect on a healthy machine. If the valve survives every test but the fill is still weak, scale is usually the reason — a deep cleaning service clears it, and the maintenance guide keeps it away. And a valve that seeps past its plunger quietly inflates the water bill — our water usage guide puts numbers on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about our washing machine service, repair process, warranty and pricing.

How do I know if my washing machine inlet valve is faulty?

Classic signs: the washer won't fill at all, fills very slowly, fills even when switched off, or shows a water-inlet error code like 4E or IE. A technician confirms it by testing each solenoid coil's resistance (typically 3–5 kΩ) and the voltage feed before replacing anything.

Can a clogged inlet filter be cleaned instead of replacing the valve?

Often yes. Mesh filters at the valve inlet clog with sediment and hard-water deposits — cleaning them restores flow. If the coils are burnt or the valve body is scaled shut, replacement is the reliable fix.

Is a leaking inlet valve dangerous?

Water near electrical parts is always a risk. A valve that drips inside the cabinet can wet the floor pan and wiring over time. Get it inspected and replaced promptly.

How is an inlet valve solenoid tested with a meter?

A service engineer sets a digital multimeter to ohms across each coil terminal — a healthy solenoid reads roughly 3–5 kΩ. An infinite reading means a burnt coil and a far-below-range reading a shorted winding; either confirms the valve, not the wiring, as the fill-fault culprit. See our fill-fault guide for the full sequence.

What voltage should reach the inlet valve during a fill?

When the board commands a fill, the valve connector should show 220–240 V AC on a multimeter. If coils test healthy but no voltage arrives, the fault is upstream — a triac, relay or harness issue — which is PCB territory, not a valve swap.

What water pressure does a washing machine inlet valve need?

Most valves are specified between roughly 0.3 and 10 bar (30–1000 kPa) at the hose. Below about 0.3 bar the machine fills slowly no matter how new the valve is — a plumbing limitation that mimics a valve malfunction. During installation checks we always verify tap pressure before condemning parts.

How long does a washing machine inlet valve last?

Typically 8–10 years, but hard-water sediment shortens that considerably by clogging the inlet mesh and jamming plungers. Periodic maintenance habits — cleaning filters and descaling — are the cheapest way to reach full valve lifespan.

Are aftermarket inlet valves as good as the original part?

Quality varies widely: well-made units match the original coil gauge and diaphragm material, while the cheapest swaps hum, dribble and fail within months. Our technicians fit tested, brand-matched valves and say so honestly when only a genuine-spec part will do — details are on our brands page.

Why does my washer overflow or fill even when switched off?

That points to a plunger mechanically jammed open by sediment or scale — an electrical test will show healthy coils, which is exactly how the fault is separated from a board defect. Treat it as urgent, since an unattended fill can flood the home; see leak and overflow diagnosis.

Which parts usually fail together with the inlet valve?

The inlet mesh filters, the flood-safe hose washer, the pressure-sensor air chamber that tells the board when to stop filling, and the board triac that drives the coils all sit in the same chain. A deep cleaning service clears the scale that stresses this whole circuit at once.

Related Washer Components, Faults & Services

Components live in chains — a weak capacitor stresses a clutch, a clogged pump starves a pressure sensor. These related parts, faults and services show how the system connects.

Inlet valves fail electrically (open coil) or mechanically (jammed plunger, clogged screen) — both end in fill faults. The symptom chain is mapped in the fill-fault guide, and valve-related codes in the code library.
