4E Error on Samsung Washing Machines — The Complete Fix Guide
On Samsung's WW front loaders and WA top loaders, 4E/4C means the fill timed out. Samsung-specific causes: dual inlet valves, one-per-path mesh clogs, and the air-chamber pressure sensing Samsung favours.
How Samsung Fills Water — and Where It Fails
Samsung washers use multi-way inlet valves: separate solenoid paths for cold, hot (where fitted), and rinse-with-softener flushes. Each path has its own mesh screen and its own solenoid — which is why 4E can be path-specific (mid-cycle, hot-only) rather than constant. Each solenoid and mesh is replaceable — the job is described on our inlet valve replacement page.
Samsung's water-level sensing runs through an air chamber and pressure sensor rather than a float. A blocked chamber or a lazy sensor produces 4E even with water visibly flowing — the machine fills, the sensor stays silent, the clock runs out. LG's air-chamber equivalent is decoded in the IE guide.
Samsung-Specific 4E Branches
- Single-path mesh clog — one solenoid's screen blocked; explains hot-only or rinse-only 4E patterns.
- Dead solenoid on one path — clicks present on some fills, absent on others; valve assembly replaced as a unit.
- Air-chamber blockage — detergent sludge plugs the pressure chamber; the machine fills blind. Chamber flush restores sensing.
- Pressure sensor drift — sensor reports low levels that never cross the fill-complete threshold; meter-tested and replaced where out of spec. Sensor-side testing sits under our PCB repair service.
- Low household pressure — Samsung's timeout is strict; overhead-tank buildings in summer genuinely need the tap fully open and hoses short.
General 4E causes and user checks are in the main 4E guide.

Valve & Sensor Testing
Each solenoid path is voltage-tested; the pressure side is verified with the chamber inspected.

Repair ends with a monitored fill across all programs that previously failed, plus your 90-day warranty.
Samsung 4E by Valve Path — Which Solenoid Failed?
Samsung's multi-way valve turns one code into several distinct faults, and the program that fails identifies the path. Match your 4E's timing to the table and the valve, chamber or sensor branch falls out before testing begins.
| Code state | Probable cause | Component to test | Fix path |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4E on every program from the start | Shared supply restriction | Tap, hoses, both mesh screens | Bucket-flow test, then mesh cleaning |
| 4E on hot programs only | Hot solenoid path failed | Hot winding and its mesh | Valve assembly replaced as a unit |
| 4E at the softener flush | Third path failed | Rinse-flush solenoid | Multi-way valve replacement |
| Water visibly filling, 4E anyway | Level signal absent | Air chamber, hose, pressure sensor | Chamber flush, then sensor test |
| 4E recurring on a new valve | Unaddressed second branch | Level sensing, supply debris | Full fill-and-confirm verification |
The cross-brand fill-family view — LG's IE, Bosch's E17, Whirlpool's LF — is in the main 4E guide, and the codeless version of the same fault is walked through in the not-filling guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about our washing machine service, repair process, warranty and pricing.
Why does my Samsung show 4E mid-cycle only on hot washes?
Hot programs open a second valve path. On dual-valve Samsungs, one path's mesh or solenoid often fails alone — cold fills work, hot fills time out. The valve is replaced as a unit; it's a same-visit job.
Can I fix Samsung 4E by cleaning the mesh myself?
Often yes — tap off, hose off, clean the screen at the machine end. If 4E persists after mesh cleaning on both paths, the solenoid or pressure side needs instrument testing.
Is 4C different from 4E on Samsung?
No — same error, newer lettering. Samsung panels migrated from 4E to 4C; the meaning and fixes are identical.
How many valve paths does a typical Samsung washer have, and why does it matter?
Most Samsungs run a two-way or three-way valve assembly: one solenoid path for the main cold fill, one for hot where fitted, and one for the softener rinse flush. Each path has its own mesh and its own winding, so a single dead path fails only the programs that use it. Mapping which programs fail tells us which path to test first — often before the machine is even opened.
What does an air-chamber flush involve on a Samsung?
The chamber is a small column on the tub that traps air for the pressure sensor; we detach its hose, flush the detergent sludge out of both chamber and hose, and re-seat the connections before running a monitored fill. It's a diagnosis-stage repair rather than a user job, because the hose routing sits behind the panel. A successful flush restores level sensing instantly — the fill completes on the first retry.
Do WA top loaders and WW front loaders fail 4E differently?
Slightly. Top loaders most often show supply-side causes — mesh clogs and low pressure — because their fill volumes are larger and the timeout tolerance correspondingly tight. Front loaders add the air-chamber branch, since their level sensing is more sludge-prone. Both platforms share the same valve failure modes; the difference is which branch heads the suspect list.
The Samsung valve was replaced but 4E returned within days. What was missed?
The usual omission is the pressure-sensing side: a valve swap fixes the water path but says nothing about a blocked air chamber or a drifting sensor, either of which produces the identical code. The second possibility is supply-side — a tap washer disintegrating into the new valve's mesh. A proper 4E closure tests fill flow and level confirmation together, not the valve alone.
Can I run my Samsung on cold-only programs to avoid 4E on a failed hot path?
As a temporary measure, yes — if only the hot path has failed, cold fills work normally and you can keep washing. But the failed path still needs the valve assembly replaced, because hot programs will hard-fail every time and a leaking solenoid can seep when the machine is off. Book the valve replacement rather than reorganising your laundry around it.
How does a technician verify Samsung's fill timeout is truly cleared after repair?
With a monitored fill across every valve path: each solenoid is commanded in turn while we watch flow and the pressure sensor's reported level rise. A repair is complete only when all paths fill within Samsung's window and the sensor confirms at the correct thresholds. That end-to-end verification is what separates a cleared code from a temporarily quiet one.
Does hard water affect Samsung fill valves faster than other brands?
Not faster, but more visibly — Samsung's per-path meshes are small and sit close to the valve seat, so sediment shows up as path-specific 4Es relatively early in a valve's life. In hard-water homes we see mesh-clogging within a year or two without maintenance. Rinsing the meshes at each hose connection during an annual service keeps the valve itself out of the conversation for much longer.
Related Fault Codes, Problems & Services
Error codes are clues, not verdicts — the same family of faults appears under different codes across brands. These related codes, symptoms and services complete the diagnosis.
Samsung's 4E maps to model-specific valve and sensor layouts — a WW-series front loader tests differently from a top load. Valve hardware is covered by the inlet-valve service, and the generic fill symptom in the fill-fault guide.
